Laowa 90mm f/2.8 Macro 2X Review by Wildlife Photographer
It's been a long time away from the channel, luckily for me, Venus Optics reached out about reviewing the Laowa FF ii 90mm f/2.8 CA-Dreamer 2X Macro which forced me to jump back into action. Apologies for being away so long and I hope to start publishing more content as we transition into our new house, area and life (this is still going on though).

    Thank you for a very practical discussion on the various types of Tripod Heads. I've been trying to talk myself into a Gimbal Mount for the past few months. After all, most of the 'cool kids' on the InterWeb have them. 😊 After a great deal of research and soul searching I've decided my Sachtler FSB-8 Fluidhead does everything I require of it. I've not found anything, with the exception of raising the height (without adjusting the tripod) I can't do with the Fluidhead. Plus, there's the video application. I use my rig with a Sony a6700 and Sony SEL200600G lens. For most wildlife and birds I use the Fluidhead without the Pan/Tilt arm. Just like a Gimbal I pan/tilt the lens holding the body with the one hand, and steady the lens with the other. My 'off hand' is used to zoom and focus. When balanced, with Drag and Counterbalance properly adjusted, the camera wil stay in position at the end of any pan/tilt. A big plus IMHO. All I can say is it works for me. If, I hadn't already owned the Sachtler FSB-8 I might have gone a different way?

    one factor photographers forget is the sound of nature. why not include recording sound as well as photographing nature. another level to yr expertise.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet Месяц назад

      I guess not all photographers are always interested in recording nature. You can see that quite clearly in many photographers attitudes to switching between photo and video - many never do despite both being visual. I think that if you make videos it’s very different. Then sound is vital and I record sound all the time and keep a large sound library. It’s also quite a bit of extra work and will depend on ones goals. I don’t have a parabolic mic but try to use ambient recordings most of the time.

    Hi Will, Years ago I lived in Kenya and Tanzania, working as a commercial pilot. The company I worked for let us use the company landrovers, so I often went on self-driving safaris. This was in 1982. I'm planning a trip back to East Africa and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on self driving safari's? I have another photography friend who is considering coming, but he wants to know a) how safe is it, b) how likely are we to find wildlife, especially the big 5, c) how likely are the lodges to rent us a room? I'm also wondering if you know which radio frequencies they use in the game parks so that we can bring our own to listen in on their reports? I'm subing and will look through some of your other videos to get more of your persepctive. Speaking of which, great tips! Those are all things I used to do back in the day (well, maybe not live view.... ;-)

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet Месяц назад

      Hi Bruce, great to hear that you are planning a trip. I am not an East African fundi, but I know a lot of people self drive or more often hire a vehicle and driver/guide to go with it. Some of the vehicles looked pretty ancient when I was visiting the Masai Mara but it seems fun. I think the main risk is how everyone else drives and cattle on the road. I wouldn’t be too worried in the southern part of Kenya. I do have a friend who lives there who would be better placed to give advice although he’s not a photographer but travels all over in his landy. Wildlife is very easy to see in the Mara, I imagine equally easy in the Serengeti, particularly if you find the prey species. You can also see vehicles from quite a distance. Amboseli should also be on the list. If you want to plan a more organised trip I have a travel contact that may be able to help in both Tanzania and Kenya - she runs paragliding safaris off Kilimanjaro so is used to more off the beaten track trips. Alternatively, my day job is at Wilderness - we own Governors camps in the Mara and Wayo camps in Tanzania - I can put you in touch if you want a more formal safari. Obviously, I spend 99% of my time in Southern Africa and if you want advice for that, I am much better placed.

      There’s only two cheaper third party lenses, the Tamron or the Sigma. You also have the 600 F11 and 800 F11 as options on the R7. I haven’t used those two F11 so I can’t answer on those. A lot depends on what you shoot, in Africa, with elephants one minute and a bird the next a zoom is very useful but less so if it’s birds that is the main subject.

    An outstanding video review of the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary Lens. I am seriously considering purchasing it to use with my ageing Canon EOS 800D and 5D Mark III cameras as I have taken up shorebird photography at Pukorokoro - the best location at the southern end of the Paciific Flyway - and elsewhere in NZ - and need to extend my lens range. At 80 years of age my expensive Canon 400 mm primary lens can do the job close in on the high tide roosts but I need a little more magnification without loss of resolution farther out and spending tens of thousands of dollars on a Canon EF 600 mm lens. And the African wildlife subjects went down a treat ...

    Great music there, which is very rare on youtube these days! Excellent review. My own experience, nearly 1 year into buying this lens, is that being 5'4 and weighing not that much this lens is a bit heavy for me, at least when it comes to flying birds. Most people reviewing these lenses are tougher and perhaps heavier cookies :) If I had had the money, I would have definitely gotten the sport version of this lens. Being in Finland, by the time the birds are cool with photographers and you can be within a reasonable distance for a nice shot, the sun rises at 4am, and it doesn't set completely. It isn't always possible to get up at that time, which means you want to be able to be out on the shittier days when light is nice and diffused. So having to stop shooting when the rain comes is a downside for sure. If I could have gotten the sport version I'd be getting way more photography done. I'm on a Canon 5D Mark III, and the lens pulses A LOT. I didn't know about the extra dock until recently, but it seems it is pretty much necessary if you want to optimise focus on your setup. I'd still buy this lens all over again (and a decent set of ketel bells to keep fit) as the price range was absolutely suitable for the shots I have been getting! Thanks for the excellent review and keep up the nice vids. Cheers!

    • @melissaspeirs
      @melissaspeirs 2 месяца назад

      Correction: I call it pulsing, but I'm on a DSLR. I would need a photography buff to explain to me what I mean. On autofocus, handheld, OS1 or 2 activated, once I've locked onto the subject, there is a second or 2 before I can actually take the shot, because the lens is still shaking around into position. If I halfpress the shutter button, it does this constantly, and you can see the frame moving in the viewfinder. Make sense? :D

    Amazing video! I've been using the canon m50 mark II and EF 75-300 for wildlife photo and video but have been looking for more reach. This lens seems like this will get me there within my budget. Should I be looking at other camera bodies or stick with my m50 mark II?

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet 2 месяца назад

      It depends what you shoot. Be careful of recommendations for “wildlife” cameras and lenses. There is a predominance of info based around bird and bird in flight photography. This is NOT the same as wildlife photography. Wildlife is not as fast nor generally as demanding on gear and autofocus. So yes your M50 plus a decent long lens will be perfectly adequate for wildlife. For most perched and slowly moving birds too. It will struggle, compared to other more appropriate cameras, for bird in flight.

    • @wildlifesammy8593
      @wildlifesammy8593 2 месяца назад

      @@WillGoodlet Ah yes, that is an important distinction. I should have specified I primarily focus on small birds

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet 2 месяца назад

      @wildlifesammy8593 if the lens is in budget then its a nice addition and the reach on the M50 will help a lot. You can always bump your camera up later. The 600mm will make a huge difference for small birds and the limitations of your camera will just Make you more inventive as a photographer! This gear just wasn’t even conceived of when i started with 300mm and film cameras. So you can still get good shots with it. The lens is the most important part of the equation. Get the best one you are comfortable spending on.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet 2 месяца назад

      Great to hear from you, must have been interesting! And you are in a beautiful location now. Either the tamron or this lens are good value options. If you want to spend more then the nikon 200-500 is also very nice and obviously you can go up from there. For value for money, there’s nothing really like the sigma. The gains on the other lenses will mainly be AF performance

    • @henrys9244
      @henrys9244 2 месяца назад

      Thanks! Grass always looks greener on the other side! Nothing like the real wildlife as found in south africa, from the insect species right up through reptiles we have it all back there here we have italien wolves france killed out their own wolve species and you barely find any snakes or insects here so yes beautiful lanscape but it just slightly lacks the bush feeling . I use to work as engineer on the super yachts and currently working on the yachtd but shorebased and shorebased doesn't pay as well as being onboard so am limited to around €1k for a wildlife lens between 150 and 600( +-) wolves and buck here dont like people so figure with camo and patience and a 600mm i might just get that one shot... Im thinking 2nd hand people here buy and sell lenses out the box they use it once or twice they not prepared to walk or carry the weight so can get great 2nd lenses barely used here. Thing is i do like misty and rainy conditions and camping in my 1man tent over long treks so guess sigma is that better option, though again can i protect a tamrom well with a lens protector cover and be careful for that slightly better AF? Pffff its a hard call for me or that nikon sounds great but then AF and weather sealing i am out there a lot in the weather . Lol.

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet 2 месяца назад

      @henrys9244 I just had a quick look at All three on Wex and they all seem to be roughly the same price in the UK. The Sigma 150-600 is not weather sealed. It has some sealing but not As much as the Sigma 150-600 sport (the more expensive version). The Tamron 150-600 G2 does have some weather sealing. Morten Hilmer uses it (have you seen his videos, its was his favourite lens at one point) a lot in very tough conditions. With Euro 1k you should be able to pick up any of these three

      Sorry! I’ve just moved into the new house, connected the drives tonight. But lots of jobs to do on the property and also for work. So have to start back slowly Hope you are doing well?

      @@WillGoodlet oh. I'm sorry, I didn't know that you have moved. Congratulations with your new place. When things are sorted out I hope you will pick up creating more of your content. I'm doing well considering the situation. I've been stuck in a chair for 6 weeks due to an accident when training giant slalom. Got 4 fractures in my pelvis. BTW. That's not recommended. It truly sucks.. So, during this weeks I've spent a lot of time here on RUclips watching your videos and many others.. That said, I've been on my first trip out in the woods. On crutches. But sadly without cameras. Hope you do well?

    Super useful video as ever Will. After a lot of thought, I finally jumped on the 1.4 TC to use with the Fuji 70-300 on the X-T4 and it's been excellent! No loss in image quality and the autofocus in good light is not affected at all and still really fast. Thanks for this video dude because the two factors you mentioned about how useful it can be for video along with not losing as many megapixels for photos were a couple of points which lead to me taking the jump. For video it's been awesome because the X-T4 has a 1.29 crop mode for filming which gives the 70-300 w/ the 1.4 an 800+mm equivalent and for a 580g lens (700g w/ the 1.4), that's pretty insane! Plus, not cropping as much has definitely made a difference. Can't wait to release my new surfing short film on my channel early next week where I first used the combo. You mentioned when I commented on one of your other videos that you might be interested in the X-H2s. Any news on that Will?

      Glad it was helpful! Yes, I am interested in the XH2 S but I’m wary because it’s hard to sell on Fuji gear here later on. Much easier to sell Canon. Same for OM, Z-Cam and Black Magic I’d love to try them all :) The Power of the Atlantic video looks awesome on the X-T4!

      @@WillGoodlet Wow!!! Thank you so much for checking out my channel!! Really appreciate it 👍. Yeah the X-T4 is such a fun camera and very underrated for action. As long as you don't spray and pray and choose the right autofocus mode along with using single point or zone, it's excellent for sports and wildlife. Plus, the retro design just makes you want to go out and shoot almost on a daily basis. Ah fair enough, but Fuji cameras seem to be getting more and more popular cause I've seen many photographers use them since living in Morocco, so maybe that might change. Can't wait to finally do an African safari hopefully sometime next year. Do you think the Tamron 17-70 and the Fuji 70-300 w/ the Teleconverter will be enough for hybrid shooting on a tour?

    Thanks a lot Will, I will definitely have a look at the Freewell filters. I had an expensive polar pro (screw on) filter, but it makes the footage extremely soft and green and it is so hard to quickly swap between photo and video that it was better to bump up the shutter speed than to use the filter. I was wondering what kind of door mount you have? I will be heading back to SA for a couple of months soon and I am struggling with handheld video footage, so that seems like a good option. It will probably be too big and heavy to travel with so I have to look for a light weight option or the possibility of renting one in SA. Do you have any recommendations or tips for that? Best regards, Linda

    Excellent video, exceptionally informative. I have the Sigma 150-600 contemporary and I have been amazed at its performance. However, I use my lens on three Nikon bodies, a D3S, D3X and a D7000. With the D3S cranking out 11 frames per second I get great results with motorsports. Conversely with the D3X I get great wildlife photos, being that this is a 24.5MP camera, the D3S is only 12.5MP. The D7000 is my 'play/test-bed' tool so I experiment with TC's, both 1.4x and 2x. My personal 'jury' is still out on the results as yet. I found a trick when using the lens on a gimbal. As you mentioned it becoming unbalanced, I have a oblong piece of cast iron which I drilled out to put a thread through. This hangs on my Benro tripod and, when I extend the lens to 600mm, I loop it over the gimbal arm and it counterbalances the extra lens length/weight. It works for me. Strangely my two go-to lenses are both Sigma, the 150-600 and the ultra effective, ultra versatile 70-200 (If only the 150-600 had an internal zoom feature...!!). Many thanks for your thoughts and views. Keep up the good work.

    I have been enjoying it on my 7d ii for 3 years now, and I have just picked up a 5d iv that I am excited about trying it on. I have experienced the surging on my 7d ii 3 times now, but I couldn't find any information about that. Great review! Thanks!

      Thanks for watching! By ‘surging’ do you mean focus hunting? Does it occur in good light or only poor light? Congratulations on the 5Div its a lovely camera

      @@WillGoodlet I can't nail down when it occurs. It seems to be making micro adjustments. It did it once during video and 2 other times while photographing. The video was whitetail deer in evening light, and the photos were a wild turkey in dappled mid day light and a blue heron in warm morning light. I just saw a video from Duade Paton telling how he made his better by changing the settings on the lens using the dock that you can get for it. Thanks! I really enjoy the look and feel of the images from the 5Div.

      @joncothranphotography9375 I would have thought it was low light on the 7d2 because most have the problems on mirrorless but hopefully Duade’s info helps!

    thankyou - thankyou - thankyou. your are the first to explain the basics when using a DSLR focus via the viewfinder vs live view. this answers why the micro adjustment is only effecting the focus when using the view finder, when using live view the mirror is not in effect.

    What about in the 2024?

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet 2 месяца назад

      I’d say it’s still excellent value for money. Mirrorless cameras have better autofocus but 7d2 is still excellent. The body is tougher than it’s replacement, the gps is great, anti-flicker still works the frame rate is almost as good as the R6 and R5 (when using mechanical shutter - which is mostly how I shoot due to rolling shutter issues on those cameras). The optical finder is nicer and less battery hungry. The camera doesn’t overheat. Let down by poor video in comparison to mirrorless and by noise (mostly recoverable in software) and very aggressive anti aliasing filter which makes cropping a bad option. If you photograph wildlife and mammals its great. If you shoot birds in flight, it works but mirrorless will be better
